Do You Go with the Flow at Work?

Go with the Flow at work

That state of effortless concentration, where time flies by as you get a ton of work done is called “flow”. Do you go with the flow at work? If so, you are probably in the right job, with a good balance between your skills and core competencies and challenging tasks!

“Flow” was first identified and studied by a Ukranian research psychologist who became interested in how that state of flow related to improved job performance, job satisfaction, and overall psychological health. Scientists have long known that being unhappy in your job could affect more than just your job performance, but so can job happiness!

Experience flow sometimes, but you wish it was more often? You can improve your chances of this kind of deep engagement in a task by setting clear and achievable goals, ensuring quick, constructive feedback as needed, and having a way of reducing unwanted distractions. These are the things researchers have found increase a worker’s level of engagement and encourage concentration.

Flow has benefits for your employer, because you are able to get more done at a high level of competency. But it also has benefits for you, creating happiness, a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, as well as giving you encouragement to learn more and develop your skills to a new level. Job satisfaction is an important factor in overall well-being and general happiness. Experiencing flow on a regular basis makes it easier to advance in your job and take the next step up the ladder. Those who seek that flow state at work and choose jobs that allow more of it in their work day find themselves advancing more rapidly as well as getting more enjoyment out of their jobs.

If you feel frustrated, trapped, bored, overwhelmed, or just plain stuck in your job, it is unlikely you are experiencing much flow. In fact, it may be time to seriously consider searching for a new job that’s a better match for your skills, education, and interests. Dissatisfaction with your job can affect your self-esteem and your overall satisfaction with your life. It’s important to make a change when you feel truly unhappy at work. And that change can be easier and sooner than you may imagine!
