When to Work it out at Work and When to Divorce Your Job

Bad marriages and bad jobs have a great deal in common. Most of us know when a relationship needs to end. How do you know when to work it out at work, and when to divorce your job? Here are some signs it’s time to go:

1. There’s nowhere to grow. If your job doesn’t allow you to grow, develop, and be promoted, if there’s no remaining career path, you may have to leave in order to get ahead.
2. Constant conflict. If there is conflict occasionally, but your boss and colleagues are serious about working toward resolution, that’s growth and good management. There’s room for change, new ideas, and improvements. When the conflict just settles in to stay, that’s the time to start looking for a new job.
3. No balance. Are you working 60 hour weeks with no end in sight? Every employee, no matter how skilled or dedicated, needs time away from work. That’s how we refresh and rebuild our energy for the next week or next project. If you’re being asked to give extra to make the quarterly numbers, that’s fine. If you’re expected to live at the office and never see your family, it’s time to find an employer who respects the work/life balancing act needs LIFE as well as WORK!
4. The compromises to stay are too great. Are you risking your relationships, your health, or your integrity by staying in your job? It’s time to leave. You are not your job title, it’s ok to put yourself first some of the time. Your job is the way you earn money to fund the life you want to live; the job isn’t your life! Any employee can be replaced within weeks, and so can an employer. If the demands on your time put your most important personal relationships at risk, it’s time to evaluate if this job is working for you. If your health is impacted by long hours, stress from work conflicts, or by the frustrations of a dead-end job, consider your options. If you’re being asked to sacrifice your integrity to keep your job, it’s time to plan an exit.
