Amphicar on Union Lake - 5 tips to make your resume copy stand out

Have you ever seen an Amphicar before? Part car and part boat, this is an amphibious vehicle that can drive right into the water! The Amphicar was built in Germany between 1961 and 1968.

I had the opportunity to ride in one recently, and it sure does get a lot of attention! Anything different from the norm stands out. That’s precisely what you want to do with your resume; get attention.

How can you make yourself stand out in a sea of resumes? Consider the ad copy for the Amphicar:

“The sportscar that swims.”

“A sensation on land and water.”

The ad is worded to grab the attention of buyers looking for a particular experience. You can do the same with your resume!

Here are 5 tips to make your resume copy stand out:

  1. Turn the Key

These days resumes are scanned for keywords often before an interviewer reads it. Include the essential keywords for your position on your resume. Review the job description for clues on which keywords to work into your resume.

2. Shine the Lights

Your job search is not the time to be humble. Share any rewards and recognition you received throughout your career. Explain what actions you took that led to the award.

3. Put the pedal to the metal

Make your accomplishments quantifiable. Include the size of the budget you balanced, the sales goals you blew through, how much money your project saved the company. Not only will this demonstrate your understanding of the company goals, but it will show your achievements in relation to them.

4. Feel the action!

Use action verbs to highlight what you’ve accomplished in previous positions. Words such as “resolved,” “reduced,” “enhanced,” “accomplished,” and “designed,” are all examples of verbs known as action or power verbs. They demonstrate YOU in action! Stay away from overused words, a delicate balance of buzzwords and unique power words will grab the attention of a resume reader.

5. Pinpoint the direction

Consider customizing your resume for each company you apply to. Match the keywords, buzzwords, power words, and accomplishments to every position in which you submit your resume. This process will increase the likelihood of getting past the artificial intelligence that scans for keywords and is more likely to appeal to the manager who has it in their hands.
